Frequently Asked Questions

Why does alcohol have so many calories?

Alcohol contains 7 kilocalories per gram almost twice as much as carbohydrates or protein (4 kcal/g each) and only slightly less than fat (9 kcal/g). These are often called empty calories because alcohol provides no vitamins, minerals, fibre, or other nutritional value.

What counts as one alcohol unit?

One unit = 10ml (8g) of pure alcohol. A standard 330ml beer at 5% ABV contains 1.65 units. A 150ml glass of wine at 12% ABV contains 1.8 units. Health guidelines in most countries recommend no more than 14 units per week with at least 2 alcohol-free days.

Does the body process alcohol calories differently to food?

Yes the body prioritises metabolising alcohol over all other fuels, effectively pausing fat burning while alcohol is present in the system. This fat metabolism pause can last several hours depending on the amount consumed, which is why alcohol impacts body composition beyond just its calorie content.
